The Best Delivery I Ever Had

The best delivery I’ve ever had was my actual house! Yes – my entire house was delivered on two trucks up my steep 250-metre-long driveway in St Andrews.

After buying eight and a half acres of beautiful bushland in 1989, I needed a home – and a transportable was the quickest, most affordable option. Built in a Gippsland shed, it was then cut in half, loaded onto two trucks, and transported to my property. By the end of the day, the builders had unloaded it with jacks, rejoined the two halves, and my new house stood there – all in a single day. Amazing!

The hours before delivery were another story. That morning, I’d decided that the pipe my brother Toby and I had laid in the driveway needed a bit more protection. So I made a quick dash with the trailer for more stones. But on the way back, I hit a massive holdup in Kangaroo Ground – and to my horror, I realised the traffic jam was caused by my house! Even worse, impatient drivers were trying to run my house off the road, and I was terrified it was going to be involved in a traffic accident.

So I was relieved when the trucks pulled over to let cars pass. I raced ahead to finish unloading the trailer – just in time for the first truck to arrive.

Then I could finally stand back and marvel as the crew expertly pieced my house back together on the site I’d prepared. An absolutely staggering job!

Hard to believe that today marks 36 years since that incredible delivery. It’s funny but I think I love my house more with each passing year. I’ve added a porch, back verandah, and awnings – so this “transportable” house is never going anywhere again. It’s made its final stop … and so (hopefully) have I.

Whenever delivery drivers hesitate at the bottom of my driveway, wondering if they’ll make it to the top, I just laugh. After all, my house made it up here. I reckon the best home delivery – ever!
